{"id":2818,"date":"2020-09-04T13:49:06","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T12:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/noticia\/what-kind-of-covid-19-tests-are-there-and-what-is-the-future\/"},"modified":"2020-09-04T13:49:06","modified_gmt":"2020-09-04T12:49:06","slug":"what-kind-of-covid-19-tests-are-there-and-what-is-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/noticia\/what-kind-of-covid-19-tests-are-there-and-what-is-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"What kind of COVID-19 tests are there and what is the future?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swab or blood test?<br \/>\nAfter all, what options are there for testing Covid-19 and which is the most suitable for each situation?<br \/>\nOne of the World Health Organization&#8217;s (WHO) most important recommendations in the fight against the pandemic has been &#8220;test, test, test!&#8221;.  &nbsp;  It is therefore important that you know what options are currently available and what is expected to be available in the future.<\/p>\n<h2>Tests that detect the virus (PCR test)<\/h2>\n<p>The PCR test is carried out using a swab that takes a sample of nasal product and\/or the back of the throat.<br \/>\nThis test is currently the only proven way of knowing whether or not you have the virus active in your body.   &nbsp;The great advantage of these tests is their high sensitivity and specificity, which makes them the preferred method.<br \/>\nHowever, with this solution it is difficult to scale up testing on a large scale.   <\/p>\n<h2>Tests that confirm the presence of immunity (serologies)<\/h2>\n<p>There are also serologies, either by venipuncture or by finger prick, with finger prick tests also being known as &#8220;rapid tests&#8221;.<br \/>\nThese tests make it possible to see if there is immunity &#8211; if there is, it means that there has been contact with the virus. <\/p>\n<p>After this contact, the body develops defenses, antibodies, which can be of 2 types: IgM or IgG.<\/p>\n<p>IgM are antibodies from recent immunity &#8211; if an IgM test is positive, a PCR test should be carried out next.<\/p>\n<p>IgG are antibodies of delayed immunity &#8211; we don&#8217;t know if IgG immunity is definitive.<\/p>\n<h2>Tests in development<\/h2>\n<p>With the need to move towards simpler, large-scale testing, there has been an increase in research and the development of more tests.<br \/>\nThe American company Sherlock Biosciences, linked to Harvard University, is developing a type of test that allows the virus to be detected at room temperature, without the need for a laboratory.<br \/>\nHowever, these tests have not yet been approved in Portugal.<br \/>\nThe UK also started using Covid-19 diagnostic tests at the beginning of August, which promise to reduce the waiting time for results from 24 hours to 90 minutes.<br \/>\nThe unique thing about these tests is that as well as detecting Covid-19, they can also detect the flu virus &#8211; which could prove particularly useful for making more accurate diagnoses in winter.      <\/p>\n<p>As new solutions are recognized by the Directorate-General for Health in Portugal, we will make them known to all our partners and clients.  <\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Swab or blood test?<br \/>\nWhat options are there to test for Covid-19? <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1759,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2818","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2818","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2818"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2818\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1759"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2818"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2818"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sepri.pt\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2818"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
