Like any adult, children are feeling the harmful effects of this new pandemic.
It’s therefore very important to pay even more attention to their needs as little ones who don’t understand the reason for such a drastic change in their lives.
Here you’ll find some actions to take in their daily lives that will help them cope with the stress and anxiety they may feel.
Children are often more stressed and anxious without us realizing it.
Children show their feelings in as many ways as possible, many of them asking for more lap time than usual, but sometimes they also try to be more dependent.
Others show anxious behavior by becoming more agitated and/or angry, isolating themselves from their family and even wetting the bed.
These are all behaviors to watch out for if they start to appear more markedly than usual.
Never ignore changes in a child’s behavior.
Respond to their reactions by being understanding, showing support and always listening to their concerns with an extra dose of affection and attention.
In difficult times, children need more love and attention from adults.
Give them more time and attention and try to reassure their fears.
In this article you’ll find some ways to help you respond to children’s behavioral changes:
-
Present facts about what has happened and what is happening.
Provide them with clear information on how to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection, always using words adapted to the child’s age to ensure they understand. -
In a reassuring way, give them information about what might happen (for example, if a relative and/or the child themselves start to feel unwell, they will have to go to hospital for a while and receive help from the doctors, who will help them feel better).
-
If possible, and always respecting the rules of social distancing, create opportunities for your child to play and relax.
-
As far as possible, stick to the children’s usual routines and schedules
-
Keep children close to their parents/family members and avoid separating them from their caregivers.
If separation does occur, for example in the event of hospitalization, try to keep the child calm and safe and ensure that there is regular contact, by telephone for example. -
In difficult times, children need the love and attention of adults, so give them the time they need.
