Why is it important to assess psychosocial risks?

According to the Mental Health at Work Report, three out of five employees (60%) have experienced psychological health problems at work.
It is estimated that workers miss up to 8 days a year due to stress and psychological problems and the loss of productivity can cost companies up to €5.3 MILLION a year.

In addition to the loss of physical and mental health, the economic cost is another reason for assessing psychosocial risks in organizations.

Is psychosocial risk assessment a legal obligation?

Yes, the employer has to assess all the risks to which workers are exposed and which cannot be avoided, such as psychosocial risks.

Directive 89/391/EEC on the introduction of measures to encourage improvements in the safety and health of workers at work (Framework Directive) has been transposed into national law in all EU Member States, including Portugal.

Article 5 of the Framework Directive states that: “The employer has a duty to ensure the safety and health of workers in all aspects related to work.”
According to Article 6 of the Framework Directive, the employer “shall assess the risks which cannot be avoided” and, according to Article 9, “the employer shall have an assessment of the risks to safety and health at work, including those borne by groups of workers exposed to specific risks”.

Who carries out the psychosocial risk assessment?

Psychosocial risk assessment should be carried out by an occupational psychologist.

What are the causes?

In general terms, they can be listed:

  • Occupational stress;

  • Harassment (moral and sexual);
